Characteristics of those affected with MPS VI

Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome is a rare progressive physical disorder for affected individuals. Intelligence is not affected by the disease and many children are of above average ability.

Those who are very mildly affected may be hardly changed in appearance. However, many of those with Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome become uncannily like each other. Their heads are rather large, with a short neck, chubby cheeks, a broad nose with a flat bridge and wide nostrils. Shoulders are narrow and rounded and the stomach tends to stick out. The hair is coarser than usual. The eyebrows are bushy and there may be more hair than usual on the body. The skin may become thickened and less elastic than usual.

Adults with Maroteaxu-Lamy syndrome will usually be of restricted growth. Their height may be anywhere between 107cms and 138cms.
