Current Research into MPS IV

At present there is treatment for symptoms as they arise but no cure for the underlying condition. Various experimental methods have been used to try to replace the missing enzyme, but none so far has been of any significant long-term benefit. Bone marrow transplant was tried but with disappointing results and is not recommended as a treatment for Morquio disease.

Research is focused on ways of getting the missing enzyme into bone. This is particularly difficult. The MPS VI cat model is being used for this purpose in Adelaide because of the bone involvement present in this disorder.
