What
educational options are available and when can I
access them?
- After your child is diagnosed
with an MPS condition you can access a range of
services to assist your child to achieve their
full potential.
Early Intervention
- Early intervention can provide
assessments and therapy for babies and young
children before they start school,
including physiotherapy, speech therapy,
occupational therapy and hydrotherapy and the
services of a trained teacher. Early
intervention can be provided either in the home,
for very young children, or through specialist
centres. Your local child health service
or paediatrician should be able to provide you
with details of what is available in your local
area.
School
- When your child is ready to
start school there are a number of options
available including:
- regular schooling in
independent, Catholic and government schools
- special classes in regular
schools for children with disabilities
- specialist schools for
children with disabilities
- Regular Schooling - specialist
help is available in the form of specialist
teachers and integration aides. Your child
may qualify for additional support depending on
their level of need, your wishes and the
capacity of the system to provide this.
The decision of where to send your child to
school can be a difficult one to make so you
should ideally start the process early.
Arrange visits to check out the facilities and
potential resources available in your local
schools well ahead of time.
